Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft

Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft
FTC | 2006 | ISBN: 18774384338 | English | PDF | 52 pages | 6 MB

In the course of a busy day, you may write a check at the grocery store, charge tickets to a ball game, rent a car, mail your tax returns, change service providers for your cell phone, or apply for a credit card. Chances are you don’t give these everyday transactions a second thought. But an identity thief does.

Identity theft is a serious crime. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years – and thousands of dollars – cleaning up the mess the thieves have made of a good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims of identity theft may lose job opportunities, be refused loans for education, housing, or cars, and even get arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. Humiliation, anger, and frustration are among the feelings victims experience as they navigate the process of rescuing their identity.

Working with other government agencies and organizations, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has produced this booklet to help you remedy the effects of an identity theft. It describes what steps to take, your legal rights, how to handle specific problems you may encounter on the way to clearing your name, and what to watch for in the future.

Despite your best efforts to manage the flow of your personal information or to keep it to yourself, skilled identity thieves may use a variety of methods to gain access to your data.

Software Security Engineering: A Guide for Project Managers

Julia H. Allen, Sean Barnum, Robert J. Ellison, Gary McGraw, Nancy R. Mead “Software Security Engineering: A Guide for Project Managers”
Addison-Wesley Professional | 2008-05-11 | ISBN: 032150917X | 368 pages | CHM | 1,7 Mb
Software that is developed from the beginning with security in mind will resist, tolerate, and recover from attacks more effectively than would otherwise be possible. While there may be no silver bullet for security, there are practices that project managers will find beneficial. With this management guide, you can select from a number of sound practices likely to increase the security and dependability of your software, both during its development and subsequently in its operation.
Software Security Engineering draws extensively on the systematic approach developed for the Build Security In (BSI) Web site. Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security Software Assurance Program, the BSI site offers a host of tools, guidelines, rules, principles, and other resources to help project managers address security issues in every phase of the software development life cycle (SDLC). The book’s expert authors, themselves frequent contributors to the BSI site, represent two well-known resources in the security world: the CERT Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and Cigital, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in software security.

This book will help you understand why
Software security is about more than just eliminating vulnerabilities and conducting penetration tests
Network security mechanisms and IT infrastructure security services do not sufficiently protect application software from security risks
Software security initiatives should follow a risk-management approach to identify priorities and to define what is “good enough”–understanding that software security risks will change throughout the SDLC
Project managers and software engineers need to learn to think like an attacker in order to address the range of functions that software should not do, and how software can better resist, tolerate, and recover when under attack

Secrets of a Superthief

Secrets of a Superthief
Berkley Books | 1983 | ISBN: 0425056457 | 100 pages | PDF | 867 Kb

Very rare, expensive, and out of print book about burglarly. In this remarkable book, the first of its kind, MacLean draws on his own experience as well as a unique survey of 300 burglars that he conducted in prison. Describing burglary as a “mind game,” he tells you what burglars look for and what scares them off.

Jack MacLean is a professional. In a career that netted him 133 million dollars in 2000 burglaries, he always worked alone and stole only from the rich. He owned a Hughes 300-C helicopter, a $40,000 high-speed boat, and used electronics to monitor police radios and even link into their stolen goods computer network. Only once did he violate his own rules; and today he is serving a fifteen-year prison term.

In this remarkable book, the first of its kind, MacLean draws on his own experience as well as a unique survey of 300 burglars that he conducted in prison. Describing burglary as a “mind game,” he tells you what burglars look for and what scares them off. Analyzing the techniques of amateurs as well as pros like himself, he describes the ideal “burglar-proof” home, evaluates current hardware and techniques, and suggests psychological deterrents that work better than any devices. This fascinating look at home security from the “other side” is essential for any homeowner who is serious about preventing burglaries.

Written while in jail by Jack MacLean, a man who served a fifteen-year prison term for committing over 2,000 and stealing over $133 million dollars in the 1980’s (indexed with inflation that would be $356 million today) through serial burglaries and was dubbed by the FBI as “Superthief”, this book is truly one of a kind and hard to find. The information kept within it is still usable today. The author details step-by-step how burglars break into homes and pilfer, and he shows you what to do to protect yourself. My only fear is that this book would get into the wrong hands because the information inside it is so usable and so well thought-out that it could potentially be used as an instruction manual for those who want to commit acts of burglary. This book is out of print and normally goes for $150-$250, depending on the quality of its condition. I remember even seeing it on ebay once for $400. If you manage to get a copy of this book, don’t give it away or sell it. The information inside is too valuable not to pass on to your friends and relatives.

ebook When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition

Publisher: Collins 2004-06 | 432 Pages | ISBN: 0060542683 | PDF | 1.4 MB

The double whammy of successful infertility treatments and an increase in the number of women having children later in life has resulted in a staggering--but perhaps not surprising--phenomenon: a tremendous increase in twin, triple, and quadruple births. When You¹re Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads is an outstanding, much-needed addition to the pregnancy genre for women who face the alternating joy, terror, and ambivalence associated with carrying, delivering, and coping with young multiples.

Subjects like nutrition, mom's changing body and emotions, fetal development, potential complications, and labor and delivery take on new meaning when you add another baby or two to the standard equation. With the goal of minimizing risk factors associated with multiple births, Dr. Barbara Luke and her team of writers cover each subject with a buoyant determination to tell it all and tell it well--avoiding the typical "how to name and dress your twins" issues. Accompanying the detailed medical perspective of Dr. Luke are personal experiences gathered from the journals of a few articulate moms, making each subject as real as it is educational. Simple illustrations, valuable charts (including one to plot and monitor fetal growth in grams or pounds), specific menu examples (like how can you consume 4,500 calories if you're expecting quads???), and lots of reassurance make this book a winner. --Liane Thomas

Computer Viruses: from theory to applications (Collection IRIS)

Computer Viruses: from theory to applications (Collection IRIS)
9782287239397 | (2287239391) | Springer | 2005 | 3 Mb | RS | FF

This book deals with computer viruses envisaged from three different points of view, namely the theoretical fundamentals of computer virology, algorithmic and practical aspects of viruses and their potential applications to various areas. The theoretical formalization by means of Turing machines, self-reproducing automata and recursive functions enable a precise and exhaustive description of the different types of malware. It follows that the main stakes of computer defense and antiviral fighting are easily highlighted. Detailed analysis of the source code for representative members of each virus/worm family allows the reader to grasp the basic algorithmic aspects involved in self-reproducing codes. The C programming language has been systematically used for a better understanding of the considered codes.

The purpose of this book is to propose a teaching approach to understand what computer viruses1 really are and how they work. To do this, three aspects are covered ranging from theoretical fundamentals, to practical applications and technical features; fully detailed, commented source codes of viruses as well as inherent applications are proposed. So far, the applications-oriented aspects have hardly ever been addressed through the scarce existing literature devoted to computer viruses.

The obvious question that may come to the readers mind is: why did the author write on a topic which is likely to offend some people? The motivation is definitely not provocation; the original reason for writing this book comes from the following facts. For roughly a decade, it turns out that antiviral defense finds it more and more difficult to organize and quickly respond to viral attacks which took place during the last four years (remember the programs caused by the release of worms, such as Sapphire, Blaster or Sobig, for example). There is a growing feeling among users C and not to say among the general public C that worldwide attacks give antivirus developers too short a notice. Current viruses are capable of spreading substantially faster than antivirus companies can respond.

As a consequence, we can no longer afford to rely solely on antivirus programs to protect against viruses and the knowledge in the virus field is wholly in the hands of the antiviral community which is totally reluctant to share it. Moreover, the problems associated with antiviral defense are complex by nature, and technical books dedicated to viruses are scarce, which does not make the job easy for people interested in this ever changing field.

Privacy Preserving Data Mining (Advances in Information Security)

Privacy Preserving Data Mining (Advances in Information Security)
9780387258867 (0387258868) | Springer, 2005 | 6 Mb | RS | FF
Data mining has emerged as a significant technology for gaining knowledge from vast quantities of data. However, concerns are growing that use of this technology can violate individual privacy. These concerns have led to a backlash against the technology, for example, a "Data-Mining Moratorium Act" introduced in the U.S. Senate that would have banned all data-mining programs (including research and development) by the U.S. Department of Defense. Privacy Preserving Data Mining provides a comprehensive overview of available approaches, techniques and open problems in privacy preserving data mining. This book demonstrates how these approaches can achieve data mining, while operating within legal and commercial restrictions that forbid release of data. Furthermore, this research crystallizes much of the underlying foundation, and inspires further research in the area. Privacy Preserving Data Mining is designed for a professional audience composed of practitioners and researchers in industry. This volume is also suitable for graduate-level students in computer science.

Since its inception in 2000 with two conference papers titled "Privacy Preserving Data Mining", research on learning from data that we aren't allowed to see has multiplied dramatically. Publications have appeared in numerous venues, ranging from data mining to database to information security to cryptography. While there have been several privacy-preserving data mining workshops that bring together researchers from multiple communities, the research is still fragmented.

This book presents a sampling of work in the field. The primary target is the researcher or student who wishes to work in privacy-preserving data mining; the goal is to give a background on approaches along with details showing how to develop specific solutions within each approach. The book is organized much like a typical data mining text, with discussion of privacy-preserving solutions to particular data mining tasks. Readers with more general interests on the interaction between data mining and privacy will want to concentrate on Chapters 1-3 and 8, which describe privacy impacts of data mining and general approaches to privacy-preserving data mining. Those who have particular data mining problems to solve, but run into roadblocks because of privacy issues, may want to concentrate on the specific type of data mining task in Chapters 4-7.

The authors sincerely hope this book will be valuable in bringing order to this new and exciting research area; leading to advances that accomplish the apparently competing goals of extracting knowledge from data and protecting the privacy of the individuals the data is about.

Encyclopedia of Cryptology (re-link)

Encyclopedia of Cryptology by David E. Newton
ABC-Clio Inc | ISBN 0874367727 | 1997 Year | 330 Page | CHM | 2,3 M
Grade 9 UpAA thorough introduction to the history of cryptology that explains the fundamental concepts of this science. Newton provides concise, easy-to-read definitions of terms, topics, and personalities pertinent to the history of encoded messages. Entries are arranged alphabetically and often include cross-references and suggestions for further reading. Black-and-white illustrations, photographs, and charts assist in the comprehension of terms. While there are many books aimed at certain aspects of this topic, none of them do as good a job of presenting a comprehensive yet accessible overview of secret-message writing throughout ancient and modern times

Former science and math teacher Newton (Global Warming, LJ 3/15/94) has written a fascinating compendium of cryptology, the science of secret writing. More than 550 alphabetically arranged entries trace the role of cryptology, from its earliest uses in the 4th century B.C.E. to its present-day application in electronic information warfare. Comprehensive in scope, Newton's work examines cryptology's role in military communications, financial transactions, and more scholarly areas such as archaeology, linguistics, literature, and theology. The use of invisible ink, microdots, cryptograms, and modern data-encryption methods are presented, along with an intriguing examination of codes and ciphers that have defied even the greatest minds for centuries. Many of the entries include cross references and suggested further readings. Exceptional content, an extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive subject index make this volume an invaluable reference tool. Recommended for most academic and public libraries

Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard

Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard (Advances in Information Security) by Carlos Cid (Author), Sean Murphy (Author), Matthew Robshaw (Author)
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (September 6, 2006) | ISBN-10: 0387243631 | PDF | 6 M | 164 pages
The Belgian block cipher Rijndael was chosen in 2000 by the U.S. government's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to be the successor to the Data Encryption Standard. Rijndael was subsequently standardized as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is potentially the world's most important block cipher. In 2002, some new analytical techniques were suggested that may have a dramatic effect on the security of the AES. Existing analytical techniques for block ciphers depend heavily on a statistical approach, whereas these new techniques are algebraic in nature.
Algebraic Aspects of the Advanced Encryption Standard, appearing five years after publication of the AES, presents the state of the art for the use of such algebraic techniques in analyzing the AES.
The primary audience for this work includes academic and industry researchers in cryptology; the book is also suitable for advanced-level students.
