About the Author
David Evans is a writer, broadcaster and trainer who specialises in English language teaching. He is the author of seventeen ELT books, including Longman̢۪s successful Powerhouse and Powerbase courses, and he has given lectures and workshops in over thirty countries around the world from Argentina to Uzbekistan.
David took a degree in English at Cambridge University, and then worked as an English language teacher in London and Paris. In 1991 he joined the BBC World Service as a radio producer, where he was trained in radio journalism, drama production and editing. Over the next ten years, he made hundreds of educational programmes on subjects from business to pop music to poetry. During the mid to late 1990s he spent a lot of time in the countries of the former Soviet Union, where he set up and ran joint broadcasting ventures in several countries.
David still broadcasts regularly for the BBC, but he now concentrates mainly on writing educational and business books, as well as doing some teacher training.
He is married with a young daughter and lives in north London

I've found this book to be indispensible this year while teaching Business English. Deals extremely comprehensively with all aspects of the Language of Meetings. The book is divided into units such as Opinions, Agreeing,Clarifying...
The units are separated into a kind of introduction to see what language the students already know (great for the TTT approach). It then gives lists of language used for each function. Great at showing "lexical chunks" of language.
Then there's a gapfill page to consolidate and help students learn and remember.
A 'mini-task' puts the language into practice with dialogue chains, or mini-roleplays with topic suggestions. The end of the units consist of collocation matching exercises.
Great to dip into for use in more general classes, or use more methodically and work through each unit with students who reguarly have to attend meetings.
Perhaps in too much detail - I'd say it's good for use with Upper Int students and above, but with a bit of cutting and pasting, can easily be adapted for lower level learners.
BUY IT! STEAL IT! USE IT! I love it and so do my students, and colleagues, as it's never on the resource shelf but on someone's desk being used...

The Fifth Edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary is a complete update of the most authoritative reference work for modern English. The text is based on the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary and, in fact, the Shorter manages more than one third of the coverage of the OED in one tenth of the size. Version 7 presents new features:
* Spell Checker - Version 7 offers a spell checker utility for checking and correcting spelling of text in IE text entry areas, such as chatboxes, email, bolgs, comment boxes, and forms.
* Web search button - The Web search button launches a new browser window, defines the searched word with Babylon, and retrieves results for the word from the web using Babylon's search page, powered by Google.
* Expanded "GO" menu - The GO button's menu now contains in addition to the Text translation and Web Search, a Translate option, a LingoZ.com search link, Converter option, and more search languages.
* Smart Dictionary - The Smart dictionary kicks in when a direct translation from Babylon's dictionaries is not available. Babylon combines a result for the languages you selected in the Target Languages list.
* Auto-Complete - Babylon's new Auto-Complete feature predicts the word or phrase the user wishes to translate, and will automatically sugges choses for completing the word. As soon as 2 characters of text are typed into the term box, a list will open with up to 10 suggestions, based on the user's previous translations and offline dictionaries.
* Customizing Babylon's window - A new Babylon feature allows you to customize Babylon¿s Window appearance, shifting the Appearance Settings slides. The Babylon window can now be set to have a different frame and text background colors, it can be set to be transparent, and the font size can be altered by shifting the slides.
